Traditional timber framing

Here at Vermont Timber Works we pride ourselves on our craftsmanship, especially as it relates to the traditional method of joining timbers.

Some timbers already fabricated
There are two principal ways of joining timbers:  steel joinery (think gusset plates) and traditional joinery.  We are comfortable with both methods of joinery, but a lot of our clients find that the traditional mortise and tenon fits with their aesthetic.  There is just something really inspiring about seeing wood beams held together with pegs.

Traditionally joined boat house
When we fabricate our frames we use a few old time techniques to ensure that the joints stay tight after the frame is assembled.  Our craftsmen are adept at the ways of framing that used to be commonplace.

Timber Frame Barn

We have been looking at a lot of barns lately, and I thought I would try to explain some very basic barn designs to show the level of flexibility that we have in our design and fabrication process.

Vermont Barn
This is a barn that we built very close to our facility here in North Springfield, VT.  It was out of hemlock, and features a loft area for hay storage, and a shed roof for storage of equipment.  This is a very simple principal purlin design with common rafters.

Massachusetts Barn
This barn was built for a foundation in Massachusetts that has a volunteer-based farm.  It features pine beams, a traditional cupola, and dovetailed joists upstairs.  The bents have a king post profile--elegant yet simple.

New England Barn
Finally, this is another barn that was built for a client outside of Boston, MA.  It is designed for horses and equipment, and is banked into the terrain for small equipment storage on the second floor.

We would love to be a part of your barn project.  Please give us a call at 802 886 1917 or send an email to sales@vermonttimberworks.com .
